From midnight tonight, Queenslanders will be allowed to leave the house for outdoor recreation within their household group or with one other person.

This includes going for family picnics, eating takeaway meals outdoors, going for a drive or a motorbike ride and non-essential shopping.

Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeanette Young said these measures should not lead to increased community transmission, so long as people maintain their distance from those outside their household group.

“If we see large gatherings in places, that will concern us greatly and we would have to rethink,” Dr Young said.

Cafés and restaurants could be reopened in Queensland as part of a fast-tracked lifting of coronavirus restrictions if residents abide by the newly softened measures.

The sunshine state recorded zero new cases overnight, making a total of just eight new cases in the last seven days.

There are now less than 80 active cases in Queensland, with 11 people in hospital and four people in intensive care.

There are still 2700 Queenslanders in quarantine.

It has now been 93 days since the state’s first case.
