Ranieri is the favourite to become the new head coach of the Azzurri after his latest of many feats - coming in at AS Roma in November and turning them around following a dire start to the season to qualify for next season’s Europa League.

“It’s the right name,” former AC Milan, Roma, Real Madrid and England boss Capello told Rai Radio 1.

“He took over Roma when they weren’t doing well and he performed a miracle.

“Ranieri is an experienced man who knows all the players in the national team and is capable of getting into their heads.

“I think he is the most suitable person to manage the national team, due to his experience and charisma.

“The national team coach is another type of job.

“You have to try to find the best players and create team spirit.

“Ranieri is capable of this.”
