Claudio Ranieri’s men took the lead against Filippo Inzaghi’s in the 11th minute, thanks to the latter’s former player, Gianluca Lapadula.
The Italian-born Peruvian international toe-poked the ball in from point-blank range after a weak hand from Simone Colombi didn’t clear the ball to safety.
Lapadula got his brace just before the break thanks to a penalty for a handball.
He made no mistake from the spot, passing it cooly down the middle.
It was more of the same in the second half, with Marco Mancosu also scoring from a spot kick, this time thanks to a dubious decision from the referee, who judged a Cagliari player had been fouled in the box.
The final nail in Reggina’s coffin came in the 93rd minute when Lapadula headed the ball back into the path of Gabriele Zappa who slotted it home past a scrambling Colombi.
Cagliari move into sixth while Reggina are only one place below.
