At an altitude of 2700 metres in the region of Trentino Alto Adige, Marmolada is known as “Queen of the Dolomites”.
The remains were discovered by an excursionist last week due to the summer heat that melted the ice usually covering the area.
They had remained trapped for over a century in one of the zones of the so-called ‘white war’, fought at high altitude between Italy and Austria-Hungary from 1915 to 1918.
The soldiers’ remains were retrieved in an operation coordinated by Carabinieri and finance police from the Rolle Pass, near the mountain resort of Moena.
They have now been taken to Canazei and will likely be buried in the military cemetery of Asiago.
Carabinieri police said the two infantrymen belonged to the Como Brigade.
They were identified thanks to their military tags and brigade’s flash.
