“The eclectic artist died yesterday (Friday) at his home in Rome,” the gallery announced in tribute to Patella, one of the nation’s first artists to experiment with multimedia, from graphics to photography and film language.
“In affectionate memory we draw close to Rosa Foschi and all those who were close to him,” it continued.
Born in the capital in 1934, Patella’s artistic research traversed the consecutive art movements over the decades.
After completing his art studies in Rome, he devoted himself in particular to experimenting with chalcography (the art of engraving on copper or brass), but he was also interested in experimental cinematography and in the confrontation between art and science, which he called ‘art and non-art’.
Patella belonged to the L’attico gallery group in Rome and his works have been included in six editions of the Venice International Art Biennale and feature in numerous museum collections, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.
