After Zuppi met President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, the Holy See issued a statement saying: “On Tuesday 6 June, His Eminence Card. Matteo Zuppi, Envoy of Pope Francis, concluded his brief but intense visit to Kyiv, accompanied by an Official of the Secretariat of State, during which he also had the opportunity to pause in prayer in the ancient church of Saint Sophia.
“At the end of his mission, he cordially thanked the civil authorities for the meetings held, in particular for the one with President Volodymyr Zelenskyi,” the note added.
“The results of these talks, like those with the religious representatives, as well as the direct experience of the atrocious suffering of the Ukrainian people due to the ongoing war, will be brought to the Holy Father’s attention and will undoubtedly be useful in evaluating the steps to be continued to take both at the humanitarian level and in the search for paths to a just and lasting peace.”
In the past the Ukrainian President has expressed scepticism at the Vatican’s ability to affect the situation.
