The point moved the Giallorossi up to fourth place and into the Champions League spots - a significant step for a team that failed to qualify for Europe’s elite competition during Mourinho’s first two seasons in charge.
But it was a costly night for Roma.
Paulo Dybala limped off early with an apparent injury and goal scorer Romelu Lukaku was shown a red card that will keep him out of next weekend’s visit to Bologna.
Full-back Nicola Zalewski was also dismissed after picking up a second yellow card midway through the second-half.
Lukaku, who headed home a cross from Dybala after five minutes at the Stadio Olimpico, was shown a straight red for a foul on Christian Kouame as normal time ticked towards the 90.
Lucas Martinez Quarta equalised for Fiorentina - who had Nikola Milenkovic dismissed deep into stoppage time - on 66 minutes, but Mourinho’s men held tight to extend their unbeaten run at home to six matches.
