The home side had 58 per cent possession and created 16 shots on goal to Roma’s 10.
Ademola Lookman and Ibrahim Sulemana scored either side of Bryan Cristante to secure third-placed Atalanta the points.
Lookman had the ball played into him with his back to goal in the box, but he was able create space for himself to shoot on the turn, leaving Mile Svilar rooted to the spot as it went in.
Cristante made it 1-1 after heading in a ball whipped in by Matias Soulé.
In the 63rd minute, Roma thought they had a penalty for what looked like a foul on Manu Koné, but VAR ruled it out as no contact had been made with the Roma player.
Sulemana sealed the win for Atalanta with a powerful volley that sailed low into the bottom right corner from well outside the box.

The loss leaves Roma in sixth, a point behind Lazio and Juventus. The win means Atalanta cannot finish below third.
