Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has asked the foreign ministry’s secretary general, Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia, to convey the message to the Iranian Ambassador in Rome.

During talks on Saturday afternoon, Ambassador Guariglia delivered Rome’s invitation to Ambassador Mohammad Reza Sabouri to contribute to break the cycle of military actions that could spark a wider regional military clash.

Tajani, according to a note issued by the foreign ministry, believes it “is important for the new administration led by President Pezeshkian and for all Iranian institutions to proceed along the path of dialogue with Europe and with all countries in the region”.

“Italy will always be ready to get involved in any political and diplomatic activity,” the note said.

Rome asks Iran to deal in a strategic manner with international protagonists in the region, according to the message.

The Italian government, as rotating president of the G7, will remain committed in delivering to Iran the calls for moderation coming from the group’s member countries as well as from other States in the region, the statement added.

Meanwhile, Tajani has also urged Italian citizens currently in Lebanon to return to Italy.

“Given the worsening situation, we urge Italians temporarily residing in Lebanon not to travel to the South of the country and to return to Italy with commercial flights as soon as possible,” he wrote on X.

“We also urge Italian tourists not to travel to Lebanon.”
