The woman passed away at the Canberra Hospital overnight, bringing the national death toll to 63.
“It is with sadness that I report that the ACT has recorded its third death from COVID-19,” Chief Health Officer Dr Kerryn Coleman said in a statement.
“I offer my sincere condolences to this person’s family and friends.
“My thoughts are with you in this very difficult time.”
There were no new cases of coronavirus recorded in the territory overnight, Dr Coleman said, with the total remaining at 103.
Dr Coleman said this most recent death was a stark reminder of the danger of this disease, at a time when the number of cases were falling in the ACT.
“The very sad reality of this disease is that it is most dangerous for the elderly and the vulnerable, who are at a greatly increased risk of complications,” she said.
“While we have seen a flattening of the curve in Canberra, it is necessary that we all continue taking physical distancing seriously to protect these vulnerable groups.”
Nineteen of Australia’s 63 coronavirus deaths and more than 700 cases have been linked to the Ruby Princess cruise ship.
The NSW government has launched a special commission of inquiry to investigate the ship which will run alongside a police probe.
The Ruby Princess remains docked in NSW with 140 crew now infected with the virus.
The ship is expected to leave Australian waters by Sunday.
