Enrico Letta, the leader of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), told Fratelli D’Italia (FdI) leader and likely future premier Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday that her own coalition was damaging Italy's interests, not the opposition.
Ex-premier Letta referred to Forza Italia (FI) leader Silvio Berlusconi saying he had re-established ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin and new Lower House Speaker and Lega bigwig Lorenzo Fontana, suggesting Western sanctions on Russia could have a “boomerang” effect.
He also mentioned FI Senator Maurizio Gasparri presenting a bill to grant legal status to the “conceived”, which has been seen as an attempt to attack the 194 law guaranteeing the right to abortion.
"A question for Giorgia Meloni," Letta said via Twitter.
"Who is damaging Italy abroad? The opposition doing its job as the opposition? The House Speaker who delegitimizes European sanctions on Russia? Gasparri against the 194? (Or) Berlusconi re-establishing ties with the invader of Ukraine?"
Last week Meloni called on Letta to apologize after he criticized the ruling coalition's picks for the new parliamentary speakers, describing them as “incendiary” while he was in Berlin for the Congress of the Party of European Socialists (PSE).
