The ambassador was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.
Before opening fire, the gunman yelled, “We die in Aleppo, you die here”.
"You will not taste security until our towns are secure. Do not forget about Syria and Aleppo. Whoever is part of it will get their punishment," he added.
The gunman was then shot and killed by Turkish police forces.
The man was identified as 22-year-old Mevlut Mert Altintas, who became a policeman in 2014 and was part of the riot police squad in Ankara.
