The decision comes after a 1-0 home defeat to 13th placed Lecce left the Salerno side glued to the bottom of the table on 14 points from 29 games, nine below second bottom Sassuolo and 11 from safety.
Sources said the club may now name youth sector chief Stefano Colantuono as new boss or Pippo Inzaghi, who was dumped in favour of Liverani five matches ago, may return to the bench.
On February 11, Salernitana announced Liverani was their new coach after they sacked Inzaghi following a 3-1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Empoli.
Former Lazio and Fiorentina midfielder Liverani was the third coach of the season for Salernitana.
Former Italy and AC Milan forward Inzaghi was called in to replace Paulo Sousa in October after a poor start to the campaign.
Liverani, 47, has had stints in charge of clubs including Genoa, Lecce and Cagliari.
