Salis, who had been named as a candidate in the European elections for the Green-Left Alliance (AVS) in a bid to get the long-sought house arrest, saw her appeal upheld by a second-instance Hungarian court on Wednesday.
Hungary’s prison service said Tuesday Salis can vote in the June 8-9 European elections she is standing in, calling her father Roberto’s claims that they were preventing her “baseless”.
Salis is accused of attempted murder for allegedly being part of a German-led hammer gang that allegedly targeted neo-Nazis in February 2023.
If Salis is elected to the European Parliament, she would have immunity from prosecution.
Italian ministers have taken a sof approach to the case, stressing the independence of the Hungarian judiciary in a country with EU-asserted rule of law issues.
