“Blocking the country for 24 hours throughout Italy nine days before Christmas means chaos,” Salvini told Radio24.

“You cannot leave 20 million Italians who use public transport without it,” he added.

“My rights and responsibilities include guaranteeing the right to strike, but restricted to four hours.

“Whoever disobeys will pay the consequences laid down by law,” concluded Salvini.

On Tuesday the USB grass-roots union said after talks with Salvini that the all-day strike involving buses, trams and subways would go ahead as planned despite the injunction.

It said the right to strike “is guaranteed by our Constitution”, adding that it would appeal against the injunction to the regional administrative court.

This is the latest episode in ongoing tension with unions over strikes in the transport sector that has already seen Salvini issue two strike injunctions in recent weeks.
