The couple, who have been together for 18 years and were married abroad a year ago, became the fathers of a baby boy, Mattia and a baby girl, Silvia thanks to their surrogate mother, Sharon.
The couple, a self-employed professional and a white-collar worker, first met a woman who donated her eggs, and then Sharon who decided to help them become parents according to US law.
The twins were said to be happy and healthy.
Surrogacy is illegal in Italy, although gay civil unions were legalised earlier this year.
