The visitors had 55 per cent of the ball and created ten scoring chances to Ternana’s six.

Sampdoria went ahead in under five minutes thanks to a penalty awarded for a push in the back on Fabio Depaoli by Alessandro Celli.

Antonio La Gumina stepped up to the spot and went to his right as Antony Iannarilli dived the other way.

Iannarilli stopped La Gumina’s next effort though, a volley that hit too centrally.

Depaoli made it 2-0 in the 77th minute after he was put through on goal by a defence-splitting pass by Kristoffer Askildsen.

The striker took the ball around Iannarilli and finished into an empty net.

Ternana made the end of the match more dramatic by getting a goal back in the first minute of added time through Filippo Di Stefano who side-footed home what appeared to be a poorly hit corner that somehow went through everyone.

The match finished 2-1 in what was a good start for Sampdoria in their quest to immediately return to Serie A.
