The massive block of pecorino was produced in Loculi, in the Nuoro province, and was aged for 12 months, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

It weighed in at 598.5 kilograms and was 165 centimetres wide and 60 centimetres high.

The giant cheese block smashed a 2010 record registered in Ascoli Piceno, in the Le Marche region, for a 534.7 kilogram block of pecorino.

The new record-breaking block of pecorino was made on May 12 2019, using 4500 litres of sheep’s milk, and has already been cut into 500-gram portions which have been sold for €5 each, according to ANSA.

“The cheese was made with traditional methods and above and beyond the record it was a chance to rediscover the local area’s artisan skills and food culture,” the designer of the wooden wheel holding it, Anna Pitzalis, told ANSA.

“The cheese’s shape has given shape and voice to this part of Sardinia.”
