During the annual general meeting on November 28 last year, Scalabrini Village reported positive results, marking a return to breakeven after years of significant losses.

Chairman Rob Freeman and CEO Richard de Haast announced a development proposal for the site at 1 Lyons Rd and a new master plan for the Austral site.

Richard de Haast expressed gratitude to lifetime members and staff for their unwavering support during an exceptional year.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, all six of the organisation’s services achieved reaccreditation from the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, a highly significant accomplishment.

When asked about the most meaningful milestone, de Haast highlighted the creation and approval of the long-term mission plan, developed over the past twelve months.

This groundbreaking document, the first of its kind for the organisation, recounts the history and origins of Scalabrini while analysing key trends in the aged care sector.

It represents a renewed commitment to Scalabrini’s mission as a leader among aged care providers, responding to increasing demand and record occupancy levels.

The Lyons Rd project reflects Scalabrini’s forward-thinking approach to adapting to evolving aged care models.

With older Australians increasingly preferring to “age in place” in their own homes, the organisation is reconfiguring existing buildings to create Independent Living Units (ILUs) and provide essential support services.

This ensures a true “continuum of care” in a modern context without altering the overall scale of the buildings.

Another major initiative was the launch of low-cost rental housing for retirees in Bexley, highlighted as a tangible example of Scalabrini’s commitment to the community.

The first phase is now fully occupied, helping some retirees avoid dire situations such as the risk of sleeping in cars.

Members of the assembly applauded the team’s achievements, including winning the Best Workplace Award 2023 and the Change Champion Award.

In presenting the financial report, the chairman highlighted the turnaround achieved over the past twelve months in terms of sustainability and financial performance.

Scalabrini recorded its first profit in over a decade, laying a solid foundation for a financially sustainable future.

The board looks forward to sharing further updates on future developments in the coming year as Scalabrini continues to grow and provide high-quality services to the community.
