The plan involves structural measures, including the fight against so-called ‘token’ doctors, namely self-employed doctors who are paid by the hour.

The new plan aims to be “a guiding instrument on access to healthcare services and the management of waiting times and lists,” Schillaci told lawmakers during a parliamentary question time.

“[The plan is] based on the promotion of the principle of appropriateness in its clinical, organisational and prescriptive dimensions.”

The government of Giorgia Meloni has pledged to bring down the often biblical hospital waiting times as part of broad efforts to tackle the problems in the Italian healthcare sector.
