The demo also follows a Senate vote by the ruling right-wing coalition rejecting a proposed European regulation recognising the rights of children of gay couples and the adoption of a European certificate of filiation, due mainly to Italy's ban on surrogate motherhood.

"The PD will join the rally on Saturday in Milan, against this very harsh attack on the rights of children and girls, especially in gay families," Schlein, elected the PD's first woman leader two weeks ago, said.

"This stems from the majority's wicked choice to try to scuttle a European regulation that deals with cross-border rights to the recognition of filiation and concerns the protection of the right to mobility within the EU, reciprocity and non-discrimination, and is in line with the case law of the European Courts and does not affect national competence, on family law, which in any case needs to be changed in my opinion, but it is not clear why this right wing is so angry with children".
