As of midnight last night, Morrison and the national cabinet had banned international travel, brought social sporting activities to a halt, shut down more businesses and advised people to remain in their homes as much as possible.
“Leaders again call on all Australians to do their bit to save the lives of other Australians,” Morrison said.
“Australians should stay at home, unless shopping for essentials, travelling to and from work – where you cannot work from home – going to school and exercising.
“Keep visitors to your home at a minimum. In outdoor spaces do not congregate in groups.”
The government has used the Biosecurity Act to stop Australians leaving the country and bringing back coronavirus.
Beauty salons, pools, libraries, and real estate auctions have also been shut down, alongside the national cabinet’s earlier decision to close pubs, clubs, restaurants, churches and casinos.
Schools remain officially open – though most states have either extended school holidays or encouraged students to stay home.
Hairdressers and barber shops will be allowed to operate, but social distancing must be strictly managed and appointments must be restricted to no more than 30 minutes.
Shopping centres will remain open, but retail premises will be limited to businesses not included in the list of restrictions and food courts will be closed.
States and territories will make decisions surrounding food markets.
Morrison has also promised urgent efforts to increase capacity in the government’s welfare systems.
“I said in the parliament that 2020 for most Australians was going to be their toughest year, and what we have seen unfolding this week has been just that,” Morrison said.
“These are heartbreaking moments in our nation’s history, and story.”
