Her comments came as she addressed the Extraordinary Parliamentary Commission on Intolerance, Racism and anti-Semitism that she is president of and that she was instrumental in creating.
Speaking via video link, she also said Hamas must release the hostages it took in the October 7 attacks and that civilians must not be hit in Israel’s response.
“In Italy and in Europe there have been manifestations of anti-Semitism that require decisive action by the institutions and a convergent commitment by all political parties,” Segre said.
“This meeting is a consequence of the terrible events that have taken place, and are taking place, in the Middle East this month.
“We must stop the spiral of hatred and free all the hostages, but also protect civilians and put an end to all forms of violence.
“I want to continue to cultivate hope, trust, I’d say ‘utopia’.
“The utopia of a world that repudiates war and terrorism, that repudiates anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and every type of racism, every discrimination, a world that counteracts the rampant hatred on the streets, but also on social media and in the online universe, with the culture of peace, debate, respect and solidarity.
“A utopia of those who believe that violence is not the antidote to violence, but generates more violence, ad infinitum.”
