The 32-year-old referee, Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi, has already officiated a Serie B match.
Last December, she became the first woman to referee an Italian Cup tie featuring a Serie A side – Cagliari.
Ferrieri Capuro, originally from Livorno, graduated in Sociology and now works in Bergamo, at an employment law study centre.
She made her premiere in Serie D when she was 25 years old, and by the time she was 30, she had been promoted to Serie C.
Today, there are around 1700 women refereeing in Italy, a figure which makes up only six per cent of the official refereeing body, the Associazione Arbitri Italiani (AIA).
