Residents of a district in the historic centre of Caltanissetta in Sicily have filed a police complaint for disturbing the peace against the local priest they say has been “driving us mad” after increasing the volume and frequency of his church bells.

The locals in the San Giuseppe quarter, one of the most populous in Caltanissetta, said “for some months the sound programme of the bells, which were tolerable in the past albeit still too loud, has been changed”.
They said the bells “have now been off the scale from seven in the morning until nine o’clock at night.
“At certain times the bells are rung like crazy, with prolonged and exhausting rhythms that are making our lives impossible, wearying and stressful.”
