If you’re one of those people who were enticed by the idea, you’re not alone.
Officials in the sleepy town said they were shocked by the response after they placed a few dozen properties up for sale for less than $2.
Since CNN’s travel channel first broke the news about the initiative, which aims to revitalise the town’s population, Sambuca has reportedly been inundated by tens of thousands of potential buyers.
As of Friday, town officials had received 38,000 emails about its deal, according to CNN.
Sambuca’s deputy mayor, Giuseppe Cacioppo, said he’s “flabbergasted” by the huge response.
“The whole world has got in touch,” he told reporters.
“Callers are from Europe, mainly Spain, Russia, and as far as South Africa, Australia, USA, the United Arab Emirates.”
For anyone who missed out on the announcement, there is a catch for those who are lucky enough to snap up a home in the hilltop town.
Buyers will be required to sign up to spend more than €15,000 on renovating their new homes, many of which are run down, and to pay a security deposit of €5,000.
The security deposit will be returned to the buyers once the renovations are complete.
The houses must be renovated within three years of being purchased.
Despite these conditions, people can clearly see the benefits of this initiative, and it seems like Sambuca will be thriving in no time.
