The event forms part of a series of four seasonal aperitivi, delivered in collaboration with the Italian National Tourist Board (ENIT), each dedicated to a different Italian region.
The format combines conviviality with a broader strategy aimed at promoting Italy’s cultural and gastronomic heritage abroad.
Hosted at La Botte d’Oro in Leichhardt, the evening featured a menu inspired entirely by Sicilian cuisine, paired with a selection of wines from the island.
The experience offered guests a sensory journey through regional flavours, evoking landscapes, traditions and stories tied to Sicily.
Restaurant owner Gabriele Franco addressed attendees during the evening, alongside institutional speakers including Senator Francesco Giacobbe, who highlighted the importance of building connections, particularly for younger generations.
Also present was Emanuele Attanasio, ENIT Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand, who outlined the organisation’s strategic role in promoting Italy internationally.
Attanasio emphasised how initiatives like this serve as practical tools of cultural diplomacy, strengthening Italy’s global appeal.
The event was organised by GIA Network committee members Umberto Balistreri, Tamara Mansueto and Joanne Taranto, who oversee activities in New South Wales.
As part of the program, Mansueto led a Kahoot quiz focused on Sicily, adding an interactive element to the evening, before the traditional Lucky Door Prize closed proceedings.
More than a social gathering, the aperitivo provided a platform where cultural storytelling becomes a driver for connection and new opportunities between Italy and Australia.
Through food and shared experiences, the initiative continues to reinforce a sense of belonging that transcends generations and geography.
GIA Network is now preparing for its next major event on May 1, expected to attract an even wider audience and further consolidate the organisation’s role within the Italian-Australian community.
