Sicily's Taormina theatre events to stop due to lack of funding

The mayor said he is preparing an ordinance to suspend major events at the Teatro Antico, in the so-called Pearl of the Ionian Sea.

“The President of the (Sicily) Region, Renato Schifani has in fact denied the negotiations I was having with his Councillor for Culture on the costs we incur to guarantee public order, decorum and cleanliness,” the mayor says.

“I am forced to issue an ordinance to ban major events at the Ancient Theatre from July 1 onwards, considering that I am responsible for public order, as the police chief and prefect always remind me.”

The Ancient Greek theatre puts on acclaimed Greek plays every summer.
