It is believed the artist collided with a traffic island.
In a series of videos posted on TikTok, the 56-year-old rapper and singer-songwriter said his Italian doctor had seen the X-rays and told him he needed a titanium implant.
He praised the treatment he received from Dominican paramedics.
“The Dominicans rescued me with great care. They were exceptional,” he said.
“I made a great bike flight – but I’m afraid I broke something,” Jovanotti said, describing the accident.
I did not see the traffic island I think that I broke something on the pelvis since I can’t stand. I flew great – [but] the pain is beastly,” he added.
“The operation is quite complex, but I’ll recover.
“It’ll take time but I’m alive and I’m OK”.
While Jovanotti said his surgery will be followed by a long period of rehabilitation, he was keen to assure fans that his upcoming tour, including the Jova Beach Party, would still be going ahead this year.
There will be no canceled concerts due to the accident, he said.
