Former Italy and Inter forward Sergio Brighenti has died at the age of 90, the Serie A League said on Monday.
Among other things, Brighenti was the first Italian to score against England at Wembley, helping the Azzurri come down from 2-0 to draw in a match played on May 6, 1959.
He won two Serie A titles with Inter in 1953 and 1954 and scored a total of 155 goals in Serie A and Serie B.
He went into coaching after hanging up his boots and was deputy to Italy coach Azeglio Vicini from 1986 to 1991.
"With Sergio Brighenti, goes an extraordinary striker, who accompanied several generations of fans; a vgreat football man, who linked his name to the historic first Azzurri goal at Wembley and to the national team coached by Azeglio Vicini, whose right-hand man he served as," said FIGC president Gabriele Gravina.
“To the family, my condolences, and those of the entire Federcalcio,” added Gravina.
