Space research needs to remain in the sphere of scientific knowledge in the service of humanity and not get caught up in a commercial logic or military competition, President Sergio Mattarella said on Thursday.

His comments came at the inauguration of the academic year in Florence.
“If there is an important message it is to ensure that space remains a collaborative sphere of scientific knowledge,” said Mattarella.
“[This must be done] in the face of attempts to make it a space for commercial interventions or even military competition.
“Let scientific research in space remain as such in the service of humanity, maintaining the future of space in a collaborative vision,” he added.
