In Italy, October 4 is not a public holiday, but rather an opportunity for Catholic citizens to attend church and reaffirm their faith.
These traditions are mirrored by the Italo-Australian community, thanks to the work of the Capuchin friars at St Fiacre’s Church, in Leichhardt, who belong to the Franciscan order.
Assisted by the religious committee of the Third Order of the Society of St Francis and the Father Atanasio Gonelli Charitable Fund committee, the friars were determined to mark this important anniversary.
Two services will be held at St Fiacre’s Church, one in English and one in Italian.
The English service, given by Father Pio, will begin at 9:30 am on Sunday, October 3.
The Italian service, officiated by Father Ben, will commence at 11:00 am on the same day.
As with the church’s other Sunday services, the mass and celebratory rites will be broadcast live on the parish’s Facebook page.
