The funeral was held on Thursday afternoon in Megalizzi’s hometown of Trento, and flags across Italy were lowered to half-mast outside all public buildings in honour of the 29-year-old.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and President of the European Commission Antonio Tajani attended the funeral and paid their respects.

Megalizzi’s coffin was draped with Italian and European flags and carried by his friends, as family and colleagues looked on.

Megalizzi and his colleague, Polish national Barto Pedro Orent-Niedzielski, died in hospital of their injuries over the weekend.

The Italian reporter was in Strasbourg to report on the latest session of the European Parliament.

He was shot in the head during last Tuesday’s attack and spent three days in a coma before it was announced he’d passed away.

Trento paid tribute to Megalizzi by projecting his image onto buildings in the city’s main square, with the title “Antonio the European”.
