In a statement released after a meeting at the business and Made in Italy ministry, the group reaffirmed “the centrality of Italy” in its global strategy.

It also expressed the “will to create a sustainable future for its Italian operations”, including through its ambition to reach one million vehicles.

Earlier Business and Made in Italy Minister Adolfo Urso said the meeting with Stellantis represented a “turning point for the country to achieve an ambitious but concrete goal”.

“[We want] to reverse the decline in production recorded in recent years in Italy to reach the threshold of one million vehicles manufactured at Italian production sites.

“Last year only 450,000 cars were produced in Italy compared to 1.4 million registrations, and 80 per cent of the incentives ended up in cars produced abroad, including by Stellantis.

“This can no longer happen,” Urso added.
