Stifling temperatures expected to drop in Italy

The intense heatwave that has gripped Italy for weeks is set to continue on Thursday before temperatures gradually start to drop heading into the weekend, according to weather forecasts.

However, meteorologists have warned that the cooler weather will also be accompanied by rain and storms, especially in northern Italy, where extreme weather claimed several lives at the weekend.

Nicknamed "Lucifer", the heatwave has caused southern and eastern Europe to swelter over the past two weeks.

It also saw 26 Italian cities placed on the health ministry’s maximum heat alert last week.

The number of major cities on the maximum heat alert is set to drop to 16 on Thursday and then just one, Catania, on Friday.
