Five unions have called a strike from August 4 to 5, they announced last Sunday.

Toll collectors will clock off from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and then 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm on Sunday, August 4, then again from 6:00 pm until 2:00 am on Monday, August 5, while technical and administrative staff will join in four-hour strikes at the start of their shifts on Monday.

Unfortunately this doesn’t mean that drivers will be able to travel toll-free.

Motorway operators may decide to funnel traffic through self-service tollbooths only, which will likely cause queues and delays.

Traffic is expected to be heavier than usual throughout the next six weeks, as locals and tourists alike set off on – then return from – their summer travels.

A travel warning is in place for this Saturday, August 3, as the first weekend of the month usually sees record numbers of cars on the roads.

The Italian government is urging people to avoid travelling during peak periods as driving at these times is guaranteed to be slow and stressful, while the roads will become more dangerous.
