FdI stayed top on 31 per cent in the CATI-CAMI-CAWI poll while the M5S shed 0.7 per cent to 17 per cent.

The Democratic Party (PD) stayed third, rising 0.7 per cent to 15.8 per cent, while the League was still fourth on 9.3 per cent, up o.4 per cent.

Azione was fifth, down half a point at 7.4 per cent, and Forza Italia (FI) sixth on 6.2 per cent.

Meloni, meanwhile, is enjoying an extended honeymoon period, with a personal approval rating approaching 50 per cent.

In contrast, the PD is still licking its wounds from an election smashing and in a week’s time, is poised to elect its new leader.

At this stage the race appears to be a runoff between moderate party long-timer Stefano Bonaccini and the more left-wing Elly Schlein, who some are calling Italy’s version of American progressive warrior, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Bonaccini, who is president of the Emilia-Romagna region, is keen for a broader coalition containing both the populist Five Star Movement and more centrist parties, including Italia Viva (IV), led by former prime minister, Matteo Renzi.

Schlein – whose campaign was noteworthy for supporters singing the resistance anthem Bella Ciao at her launch – believes the PD must present a bold “progressive, environmentalist and feminist” alternative to the more conservative far right.
