Tajani says Forza Italia to hold congress in February
Forza Italia (FI) will hold a congress in February at which the centre-right party will decide on the definitive successor to late ex-prime minister Silvio Berlusconi as its leader, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said after a meeting of the FI secretariat in Rome on Thursday.

With Berlusconi’s passing in June at the age of 86, the party has been under the caretaker leadership of Tajani, but it is widely considered to be time for a permanent leader to be chosen.
University and Research Minister Anna Maria Bernini is known to be an advocate for Tajani to fill the role, describing him on Twitter as Berlusconi’s “natural successor”.
He has proposed February 24-25 as the date of the congress, but that is subject to change, depending on whether there are important elections on that weekend.
