“It was with deep emotion that I welcomed another group of Palestinian children evacuated from the Strip last night, who will receive treatment in our country,” said Tajani, who is also deputy prime minister.
A total of three special flights arrived in Rome, Milan and Pisa, bringing 31 young patients and their families - nearly 120 people in all - to Italy.
“This is the largest medical operation conducted by Italy so far, the 14th medical evacuation since January 2024 to assist the Palestinian civilian population,” he said.
“Thanks to the commitment of the government, and in particular the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, since the beginning of the war we have welcomed more than 180 Palestinian children and around 400 of their family members. Including family reunifications, 914 Palestinians have arrived in Italy from the Gaza Strip so far.
“These numbers make Italy the leading Western country in welcoming Palestinians through humanitarian operations. We have done more than all other European countries combined,” he added.
“We will continue to support the civilian population of Gaza and work toward peace. Children are a symbol of hope and the future, and ensuring their care and medical treatment is our duty.
“I thank all the government agencies, the EU, the WHO and the healthcare workers who made this evacuation possible and who work alongside us on humanitarian missions.
“A special mention goes to all the Farnesina staff, from diplomats to officials, from those in our Middle East offices to those in the Crisis Unit. These men and women have shown a profound sense of national responsibility. Many, even giving up time with their families this summer, have dedicated their hearts and souls to this mission.
“I am proud to lead this extraordinary team,” Tajani concluded.
