Tamberi announced on Sunday via Instagram that he was in hospital with a high fever, possibly due to kidney stones, and that he had been forced to postpone his departure.
He was originally scheduled to depart from Rome’s Fiumicino airport early on Sunday afternoon.
“Incredible … it can’t be true,” he wrote on social media.
“Three days from a competition for which I sacrificed everything, I’m lying in bed, powerless, with a 38.8 C fever.”
In the post, the athlete revealed that he was advised to reschedule his flight to Monday “in the hope that, with a little bit of rest, the nightmare will finish”.
