Premier Peter Gutwein announced the facilities will be locked down from midday on Tuesday.

Exemptions will be made for births, care of a dependent child, on compassionate grounds and for visiting people at the end of their life.

The rules will initially be in place for two weeks, and reviewed after that.

“It is important that we dont expose those most vulnerable in our communities,” Gutwein said.

It comes after two more staff at the North West Regional Hospital in Burnie tested positive for coronavirus on Monday night.

Six staff at the hospital have now tested positive in what authorities are describing as an outbreak.

An inpatient also previously tested positive.

Tasmania has recorded 89 cases and two deaths, one of them an elderly woman at the NWRH last month.

Gutwein said 34 Tasmanians have recovered from the virus.
