The Italian side was completely dominated as the hosts had 70 per cent possession and created 16 chances on goal to Roma’s four – only two of which were on target.
Roma knew they were in for a tough night when defender Mats Hummels was shown a straight red card in the 11th minute. Centre back Hummels turned the ball over as the last man with a poor pass that was intercepted by Maroan Sannadi, then compounded his mistake by attempting to win it back with a sliding challenge, showing his studs in the process.
The giallorossi almost went back into the changerooms level at the break, but Nico Williams put the Spanish side ahead in the third minute of first-half added time with a shot at the back post that took a deflection off Evan Ndicka.
Yuri Berchiche made it 2-0 in the 68th with a header into the far post from a corner whipped in by Alex Berenguer.
Williams had his brace in the 82nd after some nice build up play that ended with him cutting inside the box and slotting home.
Roma got themselves a consolation goal in the 93rd minute when Leandro Paredes converted a penalty awarded for a foul on Stephan El Shaarawy.
It will be a bitter disappointment for Roma, who were undefeated in their last eight matches heading into this one.
