The 50-year-old man was believed to have been of Eastern European background.

His body was found on a bench in Piazza Manzini, not far from the capital’s Stadio Olimpico.

A passerby called authorities after noticing the man was motionless.

An autopsy will be performed to establish the cause of death, but it is believed the man suffered from hypothermia due to the bitter weather currently gripping the city.

It has snowed in many parts of Italy in recent days, including Florence, Naples, and even as far south as Sardinia.

Last week, Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi announced her administration is developing a plan that would make it compulsory for rough sleepers to accept shelter in its facilities during dangerously cold weather.

Currently, homeless people have the right to refuse to be taken into temporary accommodation, even if their lives are at risk.

Around 8000 people are homeless in Rome, according to Italian daily La Repubblica, while only around half are in shelters provided by the council or charities.
