This year also represents a historic milestone, as the association celebrates 130 years since its founding, making it the oldest Dante Alighieri Society in the world.
During the AGM, members elected the new executive committee of President Dominic Barbaro, Vice-President Paolo Baracchi, Secretary John Hajek and Treasurer Christina Siciliano all confirmed in their roles.
Committee members Gabriella Gomersall-Hubbard, Teresa Castlevetere, Jessica Gallitto, Michelle Davenport and Ella McCartney were also reconfirmed, while Benedetta Ferrara joins as a new member. Poet Mariano Coreno remains involved as a member.
In his address, Barbaro described the past year as “a period marked by significant growth and strong collaboration”, highlighting the committee’s work in strengthening ties with both the community and institutions.
Among the key initiatives was participation in the Week of the Italian Language in the World, organised in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy, Com.It.Es. and Co.As.It., which helped consolidate the society’s presence in Melbourne’s cultural landscape.
Barbaro also acknowledged support from the organisation’s headquarters in Rome, which contributed to the annual poetry recitation competition, as well as funding from the Italian Australian Foundation for scholarships enabling teachers to travel to Italy.
The poetry recitation competition remains a flagship initiative, set to return in 2026. Last year’s edition involved more than 2000 students from 50 schools across Victoria, making it one of the society’s most impactful programs.
“We are deeply grateful to students, teachers and families for their enthusiasm and participation,” Barbaro said, emphasising the importance of poetry as a tool for both education and cultural engagement.
The society also continued to host a wide range of cultural activities throughout the year, including literary events and presentations dedicated to key figures in Italian culture, alongside ongoing educational programs focused on the Divine Comedy and other classics.
Looking ahead, the Dante Alighieri Society Melbourne is encouraging anyone interested in Italian language and culture to become a member.
