The event, now a much-anticipated occasion within the Italian-Australian community, was marked by solidarity and remembrance of Father Atanasio Gonelli, a figure still deeply loved for his tireless spiritual and humanitarian commitment.
The afternoon was hosted with elegance and composure by well-known singer Gaetano Bonfante, who served as master of ceremonies. On this occasion he chose not to perform, instead guiding the formal proceedings with professionalism and restraint.
Several distinguished guests attended the event. The opening prayer and blessing were delivered by Bishop Terence Brady, lending a solemn tone to the beginning of the luncheon.
Among those present were Senator Francesco Giacobbe and the Hon. Nicola Carè, members of the Italian Parliament representing the Africa, Asia, Oceania and Antarctica constituency; Simona Bernardini from the Italian Trade Commission in Australia; Hon. Matt Cross, Member for Davidson; Hon. Stephanie Di Pasqua, Member for Drummoyne; Hunters Hill Mayor Zac Miles; City of Canada Bay Councillor Silvia Alafaci; former MPs Amanda Fazio and John Sidoti; Reverend Luca Infantino representing the Catholic Institute of Sydney; Father Mirko Integlia; Frank Failla, President of the Canada Bay Club; Morris Licata, President of Club Marconi; as well as numerous leaders of Italian associations.
Following a heartfelt address by Tommy Herschell, founder of FIND YA FEET, an organisation working across Australia with sports clubs, businesses and schools, a video message from Italian Ambassador to Australia Nicola Lener was shown on the big screen.
Felice Montrone then read a message from the Consul General of Italy in Sydney, Gianluca Rubagotti, who is currently abroad.
Speeches were then delivered by Senator Giacobbe, Hon. Nicola Carè and Hon. Stephanie Di Pasqua. In his remarks, Giacobbe also addressed current international issues, expressing hope for a swift return to peace and dialogue among nations.
Carè paid a particularly warm tribute to Father Atanasio, highlighting his spiritual and human legacy and recalling his constant dedication to serving the community.
Di Pasqua, speaking with pride and a strong sense of belonging, noted that she is currently the only representative of Italian heritage in the New South Wales Parliament, emphasising the responsibility and honour she feels in attending events of such importance to the community.
During the afternoon, Montrone introduced the 2025 Charitable Fund beneficiaries, demonstrating the foundation’s ongoing commitment to community support.
He then presented certificates to the seven Foundation Ambassadors—Tom Amato, Natalino Bongiorno, Frank Furfaro, Alfonso and Concetta Messina, Vincenzo Murdocca and Salvatore Spata—who were warmly applauded by the audience.
Guests also praised the menu and impeccable service, overseen by Navarra Group General Manager Filippo Navarra, who ensured every detail matched the significance of the occasion.
The event, widely regarded as a success, concluded in a festive atmosphere with a large charity raffle, bringing smiles to the lucky winners and closing a day dedicated to memory, generosity and Italian-Australian pride.
