The Liberal party has decided to focus on Hartley, an electorate with a large Italian population which, with the redistribution of electoral boundaries, has become a safe liberal seat.
In doing so, the Liberals have backed an Italian candidate who, following the upcoming election, will almost definitely make his first appearance in the lower house of the South Australian Parliament.
The other two Italians who have already entered into the world of state politics, Mario Feleppa and Julian Stefani, are members of the upper house.
Now that the Liberals have “seen the light”, will the Labor Party respond?
After all, it was the Labor Party that first opened the doors to different ethnic communities (with the election of Feleppa) in South Australia.
Despite this, there is still much room for people of ethnic backgrounds on the political scene of multicultural South Australia.
