Selected by a special commission from Screen Australia, the film will go head-to-head with the other candidates from around the world to be shortlisted for nomination.

Proudly marking history as the first ever Australian-Italian co-production, ‘The Space Between’ is the feature-length debut for Italo-Australian writer and director Ruth Borgobello.

“This is a very exciting opportunity for us to be in the running with some of the world’s best films of this year,” Borgobello said.

“It’s an honour to represent Australia and great recognition for our film.”

Starring Italian actor Flavio Parenti (‘I am Love’, ‘To Rome with Love’) and Australian actor Maeve Dermody (‘2:22’, ‘Pawno’), this film is an emotional tale of love and loss set in the evocative region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in north-eastern Italy.

The story revolves around Marco (Parenti), a 35-year-old former chef who has given up on his career in order to return to the city of Udine to nurse his ailing father.

When tragedy strikes, the only glimmer of joy arrives in the form of Olivia (Dermody), a spirited Australian chasing her dream of working in design while on a family mission in Udine.

Set against the backdrop of picturesque vineyards and the electric blue Adriatic Sea, these two very different people find themselves at a crossroads that will change their lives forever.

‘The Space Between’ premiered in Italy at the Rome International Film Festival last October and was released in 31 cities across the nation in May.

It debuted in Australia at last year’s edition of the Lavazza Italian Film Festival and was released theatrically this July through Palace and Nova Cinemas.

It’s currently a contender for the 7th AACTA awards.
