It’s the thread of design, spun from passion, talent and a distinctive aesthetic vision. Guiding it is Anna Giannis, an interior designer with Greek roots, a deep love for all things Italian and creative experiences across the globe. Her name is synonymous with sophisticated interiors full of colour and light, where functionality and beauty exist in perfect balance.
As the founder of Anna Giannis Interiors, which has been active for over twenty years, Giannis has made cultural fusion her signature style.
“I was born in Melbourne. My father worked in construction and my mother was always surrounded by fabrics,” she shared, “I grew up immersed in beautiful materials, witnessing the transformative power of design.”
From there, studying at RMIT Design was the natural next step before launching her own studio.
While Giannis calls Greece “home”, it’s Italy that truly lights her up when she talks about her career.
“My passion for Italy began when I was ten and chose to study Italian,” she recalled. “Back then, almost everyone else in the class was the child of Italian immigrants; I was the only one with Greek roots.
“Learning the language sparked my love affair with Italian culture. And then, of course, I met my partner, who’s from Calabria.”
Today, Giannis returns each year to Milan’s Salone del Mobile, but she’s evolved from a simple visitor into a guide and ambassador. “This year, we organised our first private tour for Design Week,” she said.
“I take clients and design enthusiasts to exclusive experiences, from cocktail parties to behind-the-scenes moments with suppliers.
“Next year, we’re planning something even bigger,” she revealed.
But it’s not only about passion; it’s also about vision. “When I choose an Italian product, I know I’m holding the benchmark for quality and attention to detail. There’s truly nothing else like it in the world,” the designer added.
Anna Giannis’ unmistakable style doesn’t bow to fleeting trends. “I’m not a fan of black and white,” she declared, “I prefer colour, layering and materials.
“Everything needs to speak to each other as a whole. I want every space to tell a story.”
Her projects blend luxurious materials, high-end furnishings and global influences.
At the heart of her design process is always the client. “So much of what I do is psychological,” she explained, “Before I begin, I spend time with the person. We have dinner together, we chat. I want to truly understand who they are before proposing anything.”
Her creative process begins with listening, empathy and building connections. “My job isn’t to impose a style, but to interpret a way of living,” said Giannis, “In the end, the client should feel genuinely at home.”
As for what’s next, Giannis is currently engaged in an exciting collaboration with George Mirabella on a new exhibition space in Moonee Ponds.
