QS is a leading global higher education company that provides university rankings and student recruitment, retention and international relations solutions.
The company’s annual ranking measures factors such as the opinions of academics and employers, class sizes and the number of international students.
This year’s ranking found that the best university in Italy is the Politecnico di Milano, which came 149th out of around 1000 institutions worldwide and was the top in Italy for the fifth year in a row.
The biggest technical university in Italy, the institution got high scores for research and for its reputation with employers, on which it comes 61st in the world.
It also scored highly with international students, with more than 100 countries represented in the student body and almost all postgraduate courses offered in English.
The Politecnico di Milano was followed by the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa and the University of Bologna, which both came in 177th place.
Meanwhile, the universities of Salerno, Udine and Parma, as well as Bari’s Politecnico, made it into the ranking for the first time.

- Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, Florence (204th)
- University of Padua, Veneto (234th)
- University of Milan, Lombardy (302nd)
- Politecnico di Torino, Piedmont (348th)
- University of Trento, Trento-Alto Adige (joint 389th)
- University of Pisa, Florence (joint 389th)
