The comparative university rankings are compiled by global higher education analyst, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).
The Milan Polytechnic was up 16 slots to 123rd in the world, its best ever ranking, while La Sapienza came in at 134th, three up and its best ever, too, and the University of Bologna was steady at 154th.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) celebrated 12 years at the top of the QS universities’ rankings.
The University of Cambridge retained second place while Oxford rose one place to third.
All but one of the Italian universities rose in the rankings or maintained the same position as last year.
